During my volunteer stay at Finca La Praderita, I had the opportunity to experience everyday life on a colombian finca hosted by Yoly and Simon, a warm-hearted Swiss-Colombian couple. I immediately felt welcomed into a friendly and inspiring environment that combined cultural exchange, language practice, practical work and community life in the so-called coffee triangle (Eje Cafetero) close to Filandia.
One of the most fascinating expierences of my volunteer work was learning about the coffee production process. I helped harvest ripe coffee cherries and gained insight into the careful manual work required to produce high-quality coffee. Experiencing every stage of this process gave me a complete new appreciation for every future cup of coffee I enjoy.
In addition to the coffee production, I spent valuable time helping in Simons permaculture garden by planting and weeding. Working surrounded by the green landscapes was both relaxing and rewarding.
I also carried out practical renovation projects, including various painting jobs around the property. One especially enjoyable task was restoring an old swing and bringing it back to former colorful glory.
Great fun was also baking the finca’s homemade specialties in the afternoons. I had a great time helping Yoly to prepare traditional Swiss recipes and I learned a lot about Colombian culture and hospitality.
I felt honoured to create and launch the finca’s first ever website and give their Instagram Account a bit of a touch up. It was exciting to use my creative and technical skills to support the finca’s online presence and help to share its unique atmosphere with potential guests.
Overall, my volunteer experience at Finca La Praderita was unforgettable! I learned practical skills, experienced authentic Colombian culture, met inspiring people, lovely animals and became part of a welcoming community.
